Winter Construction in Massachusetts: What Works and What Doesn't
Homeowners always ask: "Can we start in December?" or "Is it too late in the season?" The honest answer: it depends on the project. Here's our breakdown after 15+ winters of building in MetroWest.
Projects That Work Great in Winter
Interior remodeling — Kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, basement finishing. Your home is heated, so interior work proceeds normally. In fact, winter is our BEST season for remodeling because scheduling is easier (less competition for our crew).
Framing (with conditions) — We frame in temperatures down to 20°F. Lumber handles cold fine. The challenge is concrete footings — they need protection from freezing during curing. We use blankets and heaters when necessary.
Roofing (above 40°F) — Asphalt shingles need temperatures above 40°F to seal properly. On cold days, we hand-seal each shingle with roofing cement. Metal roofing can be installed in any temperature.
Projects to Avoid in Winter
Concrete foundation work (below 25°F) — Concrete won't cure properly below freezing without expensive heated enclosures. If your project needs a new foundation, plan for spring.
Exterior painting and staining — Most paints require 50°F+ for proper adhesion. This includes deck staining and trim painting.
Siding installation (vinyl) — Vinyl siding gets brittle below 40°F and cracks during cutting and nailing. Hardie fiber cement can be installed in any temperature.
Landscaping and grading — Frozen ground can't be properly graded.
Winter Construction Cost: More or Less?
| Factor | Winter Impact | |--------|---------------| | Labor availability | Better — less demand = easier scheduling | | Material costs | Similar — sometimes lumber sales in off-season | | Heating costs | Add $500 - $2,000 for temporary heating | | Shorter days | Can add 10-15% to labor time | | Weather delays | Budget 1-2 extra weeks for storms |
Bottom line: Winter projects cost about the same overall. What you save in better scheduling and occasional off-season pricing roughly offsets heating costs and weather delays.
