Winter Construction in Massachusetts
The common assumption: MA construction stops November through March.
Reality: skilled contractors work year-round. Some projects are even BETTER in winter.
Here is what is possible.
What We DO in Winter
Interior renovations: Kitchens, baths, basements, additions where the envelope is already closed. Winter is actually our preferred season for these because customers' yards are not torn up.
Framing addition: With proper tarps and heat, framing continues all winter. The key is daily-cleared site.
Roofing repairs: Yes, on calm days above freezing. Shingles do need temperatures over 40°F for proper seal, but emergency repairs continue.
Asbestos abatement: Year-round.
Structural work: Foundation depending — concrete needs above 40°F for proper cure, but some additives extend the season.
Drywall, painting, flooring: Indoor work. Year-round.
Permitting and planning: Winter is the ideal time to plan spring projects.
What We Don't (or Limit)
Concrete pours: Limited. Air must be above 40°F for proper cure. Hot weather concrete additives can extend the season but more cost.
Asphalt shingle roof replacements: Possible but seal strips need warm weather. Often we tarp and wait.
Decks: Footings need above 40°F. Some decks are doable; most wait for spring.
Exterior siding: Caulks and adhesives need above 40°F.
Excavation: Limited by frost. Some areas frozen 6+ feet deep January-February.
Why Winter Construction Often Works Better
Inspector schedules: Less busy. Faster sign-offs.
Material lead times: Shorter. Cabinetry, windows, fixtures often arrive in 4 weeks instead of 8.
Crew availability: Top crews available. Not splitting attention across multiple summer projects.
Lower cost on some materials: Some suppliers discount winter ordering.
You can start the project NOW: Not waiting until April for a January decision.
What Winter Work Looks Like
Cold weather protocols:
✅ Tarps and heaters for framing exposure ✅ Concrete blankets and hot water for footings ✅ Snow removal between sessions ✅ Ground thaw equipment if excavation needed ✅ Indoor work prioritized for harshest weather ✅ Daily weather check; reschedule extreme cold days
Project Types Best for Winter
Best: Kitchen remodel, bath remodel, basement finishing, interior addition where envelope is closed.
Good: Interior framing for walls being moved, electrical upgrades, HVAC work.
Limited: Roofing (emergency only), siding (calm warm days only), decks (rare), foundation (specialty cold-weather only).
Avoid: New construction full envelope until envelope is closed in November.
Cost Considerations
Some winter work is the same cost as summer. Some has weather contingency added. Some is actually less because materials and crew are more available.
Snow Storm Protocol
What we do when a snow storm hits mid-project:
1. Day before storm: Secure tarps, materials, equipment 2. Day of storm: Crew at home or office (we are not making crews drive in storms) 3. Day after storm: Clear site of snow, inspect for damage, resume work 4. Schedule communicated to homeowner
We do NOT push our crews into unsafe travel or work conditions. That said, our schedule typically only loses 5-8 days per winter.
Why Some Homeowners Like Winter Projects
✅ Yard not torn up during summer entertaining season ✅ Project complete before spring (use new kitchen, new bathroom by April) ✅ Better contractor availability ✅ Lower interest in some materials due to slower demand
